The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

I picked up The City of Brass at the beginning of the year. In fact, it was the first book I finished this year! I had not taken the time to write a review about it until now.
The City of Brass tells the story of Nahri, a human girl who dreams of becoming a healer. She never believed in magic, until she accidentally summons a djinn warrior. She’s thrown into a magical world and travels to Daevabad, the city of brass, and discovers her life is more than just the simple life she had grown up in.
This book surprised me because of the amount of worldbuilding it had. The magical world is complex and full of mysteries that kept unraveling the more I read. The magic system works so well with the politics and religions in the book.
The characters were fully realized. I loved how complicated their storylines are. Nahri is such a strong female lead and I loved every single thing about her. She’s brave and empowering, I was inspired by her characters. Then there’s the other characters, Prince Ali and Dara and all the other people in Daevabad…there were so many details to each of them! It was exciting reading something with so much details.
I do have to say I got confused every now and then because I kept forgetting the names of the different creatures and regions and religions. As I said, it has a huge worldbuilding and it can be overwhelming but also super fun once you get the grasp of it.
The City of Brass is also an extremely political book. It opened my eyes to so many things! I felt like my whole life was shaken. It is a very different fantasy book than the ones I’m used to. The conflicts and issues it discussed were mind-blowing to me. It made me realize I was living in this bubble when it comes to fantasy books. All of them have the same structure, but reading something different opened my eyes to new amazing worlds. I can’t wait to expand my horizons and explore new fantasy worlds.
I bought the second book as soon as I finished The City of Brass and I can’t wait to finish the whole series. S.A. Chakraborty made a fantastic work with these books. They were really amazing and I enjoyed every single page of the book.
